CHINA PREDICTED TO BE LARGEST
CHRISTIAN NATION BY 2030
By BSU
Scholars say there are close to 80 million Christians in China today, which is very close to the total number of Chinese Communist Party members in the country. Sociologist Dr. Yang Fenggang predicts there will be nearly 245 million Chinese Christians by 2030. If he’s correct, China will become the largest Christian nation in the world.

It’s encouraging that the church is growing so rapidly in a country known for persecuting its Christian citizens. According to China Aid Vice President Kody Kness, new converts are drawn to a community that values human dignity and justice in their search for an alternative to the government’s official propagation of atheism. That’s what accounts for the growing presence of Christian communities that worship in house churches or the government-sanctioned “Three Self” church.

Kness believes the Chinese government is cracking down on the Christian church now because of its rapid growth. Historically, the government has suppressed groups that outnumber the Communist Party because they fear these groups threaten its power and control over society.

As a result of the persecution, the church is growing stronger. Kness says, “The persecution of Christians has also emboldened a new generation of believers who seek a higher authority and are willing to sacrifice their own safety and welfare for the right to worship freely.” Throughout history, the Christian church has thrived under heightened persecution. China is no exception. The church has tripled in size since China’s Cultural Revolution.

Why It Matters
As the Christian church grows in China, President Xi’s administration continues to suppress both religious freedom and the freedom of speech. Mention of Western values is now forbidden in Chinese universities and the government is sponsoring campaigns against Western traditions, such as Christmas. Both bans are related to the threat Christianity poses to the Chinese government.
