MICHIGAN HOUSE PASSES RELIGIOUS FREEDOM BILL

By
Michigan’s House of Representatives have secured a victory for proponents of religious freedom by passing The Religious Freedom Restoration Act a bill designed to restore religious freedoms once protected by the First Amendment but that have come under fire in recent years as business owners have become targets of civil and criminal proceedings for refusing to accommodate a pro-homosexual agenda vigorously pushed by the left.

For years, business owners who have voiced a moral objection to participating in homosexual unions by serving as caterers, photographers and the like have been targeted by federal and state authorities who cite a supposed violation of anti-discrimination laws.

The Michigan House-approved aims to protect these Americans who do not wish to be put in a position where they must either defy the law or defy their religious beliefs.

The legislation passed quickly through the House Judiciary Committee and was approved on Thursday along party lines with a 59-50 vote.

HB 5958 now heads to the Republican-controlled Senate and if approved, heads to the desk of Republican Governor Rick Snyder.

The law is modeled after a federal law that remains at the heart of many challenges of Obamacare that religious organizations claim forces citizens to pay for contraception even if doing so violates their religious beliefs.

The federal statute upon which Michigan’s law is based was signed by President Bill Clinton, a fact Michigan House Speaker Jase Bolger, the bill’s sponsor, says supports the idea that this bill is a no-brainer.

“Do you think that Bill Clinton and Ted Kennedy were extremists?” Bolger said in an interview. “We modeled [this bill] directly after what they did. I’m baffled to hear that what we’re doing is out of line.”

Still, the MSNBC crowd is devastated by the news that Michigan citizens will no longer be forced to bend to a radically secularist agenda.

Supporters of these bills claim they allow people of faith to exercise their religion without government interference, but in reality, they are trojan horses, allowing rampant discrimination under the guise of religious observance,” David Badash wrote at thenewcivilrightsmovement.com

The bill’s passage in the Michigan House is an encouraging sign that religious freedom is on its way to making a comeback in America. Our nation was founded on the principle of religious tolerance and this bill is a great step towards reviving that tradition in America.
