TOWN ATTACKED FOR “KEEP CHRIST IN CHRISTMAS” PARADE THEME

by Believers Stand United

Piedmont, Alabama mayor Bill Baker never imagined that his town with a “church on every corner” would have an issue with a “Keep Christ in Christmas”-themed parade. Baker was right. His town doesn’t have a problem with it, but the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) does.

Organizers of the annual parade picked the “Keep Christ in Christmas” theme for the parade which will feature both religious floats and Santa Claus.

Baker says, “It was a great theme. I was totally shocked when I received the letter [from the FFRF]. It’s a small town. It’s a Christmas parade. We didn’t think there would be any problems at all.”

The FFRF letter states that the town’s parade theme “alienates non-Christians and others in Piedmont who do not in fact have a ‘strong belief in prayers’ by turning them into political outsiders in their own community.”

In response to the FFRF’s urging to change the theme to be “more appropriate, more inclusive and constitutional,” the town changed the parade motto. However, Mayor Baker says nothing else planned for the parade has changed.

“Nothing has really changed. We still have the same religious floats. We still have the churches. We still have the beauty queens. We’re still going to have this wonderful Christian parade regardless of if we have a theme or not,” Baker said. “The town has rallied…. It’s heartwarming to me to see the Christian response that has developed.”
Why It Matters

The FFRF’s action is yet another attack on the true meaning of Christmas. There would be no Santa Claus, no gifts under the tree, and no parade in Piedmont, Alabama if Jesus hadn’t been born. While it’s disappointing that the town backed down and decided not to use the words “Keep Christ in Christmas” as its parade theme, it has at least retained the spirit of the theme and kept the religious floats in the parade.
Take Action

Remind yourself and others why we celebrate Christmas by saying and writing “Merry Christmas” instead of “Happy Holidays” or “Season’s Greetings.” Consider contacting Mayor Bayer and the Piedmont city council to let them know your support for their decision to still “keep Christ in Christmas” in its Christmas parade content.

Consider making regular donations to the Liberty Institute, the American Center for Law and Justice or other Christian litigation groups who regularly represent towns like Piedmont that have received similar kinds of letters to intimidate them into dropping their religious Constitutional rights.
