BILLY GRAHAM NAMED AMONG WORLD’S MOST ADMIRED MEN FOR RECORD 58TH TIME

Beloved evangelist Billy Graham, 96, has been named among the world’s most admired men for a record 58th time in 2014, landing at number four on the Gallup Poll’s annual list, tied with former President George W. Bush.

Gallup has asked Americans for nearly seventy years to name the man or woman, living anywhere across the globe, whom they admire most. The question is posed as an open-ended question. The 2014 poll included 805 survey participants who were polled December 8 – 11, 2014.

According to Gallup, “Graham’s top 10 finish this year brings his unprecedented total appearances on the list to 58. He has finished in the top 10 every year since 1963 (except 1976, when the question was not asked), as well as from 1955 to 1961. He has never ranked first, but did finish second every year from 1969 through 1974.”

Although Graham’s 2014 appearance on the most admired list far exceeds that of any other individual named, he was not the most admired religious figure on the list. That honor went to Pope Francis, who was named number two on the list.

Atop the 2014 list of most admired men was President Barack Obama, while former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton topped the list of most admired women. While Graham leads the list of top repeat appearances on the most admired men’s list, Queen Elizabeth of England leads the list of top repeaters on the most admired women’s list, despite not being named in the most recent poll.

Once nicknamed “Heaven’s Super Salesman,” Graham has ministered to millions at crusades held all over the world. One of Graham’s former associates once joked, “If he just read from a telephone book, people would stand up and commit their lives to Christ.”

Why It Matters
An article published on January 1, 2015 speaks to Graham’s powerful legacy, saying, “The Hollywood-handsome Southern evangelist had started his crusade ministry in 1947, when he was 29 years old, but it was the success of his Los Angeles Crusade [in 1949] that brought him to national prominence. When Mr. Graham retired from public life nearly seven decades later, more than three million souls who heard his sermons had signed commitment cards pledging their faith.” Being named most often among a secular list of the most admired people in the world simply underscores his continuing influence and legacy and emphasizes the importance of strong, moral and honorable Christian leaders to influence the nation.

You may also watch Captured by Grace, the documentary detailing the conversion of Louis Zamperini, the WWII Veteran and Olympic runner who is the subject of the current movie and bestselling book Unbroken. Zamperini received Christ at Graham’s 1949 Los Angeles crusade, then went on to do “extraordinary things in the name of Jesus.” Consider sharing the documentary with others who might be inspired by it, which is as much a testament to Graham’s work as it is to Zamperini’s.
